Champions!

Pele, Henry, Renaldo, Ronaldinho… such are the ranks that we joined Friday night as team Seleccion danced our way to victory in a well fought game against the VIPs. Few can claim the esteemed titled of Georgetown Universtiy Law Center Indoor Soccer Intramural Champions, and we are among the few. Skating to triumph in this highly, highly competitive league was not easy; two-a-day practices, wind sprints, long hours of drills, it was all worth it.

For posterity’s sake, here is our roster (of champions): Maury Birdwell, Ari Matusiak, Aaron Smith, Justin Sampson, Justin Williams, Megan “Be Rowdy” Browdie, and Craig Dukin.

Goallll!!!

beasleySaturday night the lady and I managed to score some fourth row tickets to the USA v. Cuba World Cup qualifier game here in our very own District of Columbia. Suffice it to say that the US continues to exact recompense for that Bay of Pigs embarrasment four decades ago. We crushed those commies like Castro did their human rights. The final score was a routing 6-1, with two of those goals scored by team leader DaMarcus Beasley.

As if the game itself weren’t a sufficiently poignant reminder of democracy’s proverbial ideological triumph, within two days prior to the game two of Cuba’s players escaped the tight security surrounding their team to seek asylum in the US. Read about it here. We hear all about the hardships imposed by oppressive regimes such as Castro’s, but when you read about a World Cup soccer player slipping through a service door in his hotel and running for freedom something brings it home. Congrats to the good ole US of A, and to Alcantara and Faife for their newfound political freedom! Makes he hungry for some freedom toast and freedom fries…
